Learn a provisional cast on, how to make holes (on purpose!) and decreases to form lace patterns, using charts and lifelines, and a knitted-on edging.
Equipment required:
1) one skein light-colored solid or mostly-solid fingering-weight yarn;
2) knitting needles three to four times larger than recommended on the ball band (US 4 or 5-ish);
3) a highlighter
